What Are Ortho-K Lenses and How Do They Work?

Imagine going through your day without reaching for your glasses or putting in contact lenses. You could play sports, swim, or simply enjoy the outdoors with clear, natural vision. For many people who need vision correction, this freedom from daytime eyewear sounds like a dream.

At Lowy & Sewell Eye Care, our team helps people explore their options for visual freedom. One of those options is orthokeratology, or ortho-k, which uses specially designed contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape your cornea, giving you clear vision throughout the day without any corrective lenses. When you wake up, you just remove the lenses and go about your day.

A Simple Explanation of Orthokeratology

Think of ortho-k as a retainer for your eyes. You wear custom-fitted contact lenses while you sleep, and they apply gentle pressure to the surface of your eye, known as the cornea. This process temporarily reshapes the cornea to correct vision conditions like nearsightedness.

When you take the lenses out in the morning, your cornea holds its new shape, allowing you to see clearly all day long. Because the effect is temporary, you need to wear the lenses each night to maintain your crisp vision.

The Process: What to Expect with Ortho-K

Your Initial Consultation and Eye Exam

Your journey with ortho-k starts with a comprehensive eye exam. An optometrist uses a special instrument called a corneal topographer to create a precise, detailed map of your cornea’s surface. This map is essential for creating lenses that fit your eyes perfectly.

Custom Lens Design and Fit

Using your unique eye map and prescription, a pair of ortho-k lenses is made just for you. Your eye care team will guide you on how to properly insert, remove, and care for your lenses. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor your progress and check the fit of the lenses.

Overnight Wear for Daytime Freedom

You wear your ortho-k lenses every night while you sleep. They are made from a rigid, gas-permeable material that allows oxygen to flow to your eyes, keeping them comfortable. As you rest, the lenses do their work, and in the morning, you remove them to enjoy a full day of clear sight.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Ortho-K?

Ortho-k is often a great choice for people who want to be free from glasses and daytime contacts. It may be a good fit for:

  • Individuals with mild to moderate nearsightedness (myopia)
  • People with some forms of astigmatism
  • Those who lead active lifestyles or enjoy sports
  • People who find daytime contacts uncomfortable due to allergies or dry eyes

What Age Is Best for Ortho-K?

Ortho-k is a vision correction option for both children and adults. It is often used for children to help slow the progression of nearsightedness. It’s also a popular choice for adults who are looking for a non-surgical alternative to laser eye surgery.

Benefits and Considerations of Ortho-K Lenses

Ortho-k offers several benefits that appeal to those looking for convenient vision correction. Some of these advantages include:

  • Clear vision all day without needing glasses or contact lenses
  • A non-surgical and reversible process
  • The potential to slow myopia progression in children
  • Freedom to enjoy activities like swimming where eyewear is impractical

What to Keep in Mind

Like any vision solution, there are a few things to consider. It is important to remember that:

  • You must wear the lenses every night to maintain the effect
  • Your eyes may need a short adjustment period
  • Excellent hygiene is necessary to keep your eyes healthy
  • The process can have a higher initial investment than traditional contacts

Your Questions About Ortho-K Answered

Is Ortho-K a Permanent Fix?

No, the vision correction from ortho-k is temporary. If you stop wearing the lenses at night, your cornea will gradually return to its original shape and prescription within a few days.

How Long Do the Lenses Last?

The clear vision you get from wearing the lenses overnight typically lasts for 1–2 days. The lenses themselves are durable but should be replaced regularly, usually every 1–2 years, to support your eye health and vision.

What Is the Cost of Ortho-K in Canada?

The cost of ortho-k treatment can vary. The price generally includes the initial consultation, corneal mapping, custom lens design, a pair of lenses, and all necessary follow-up visits for the first year. It is best to schedule an appointment for specific details based on your needs.
